The Power of Words Tag

 :

Loads of love go to Abbie for nominating me. Nothing makes me happier than just the right combination of words, so this should be lots of fun!

Guidelines:
~ Thank the person who nominated you and give a link to their blog.
~ Answer the original 6 text-themed questions.
~ Add a typography/word-related question of your own for those you tagged to answer.
~ Tag 6+ bloggers and let them know.
~ Include these rules in your post.

1. What is your favorite letter of the alphabet?
A, since it’s both the first letter of the alphabet and the first letter of my name. Also S, because it’s in a lot of pretty words like sea, siren, and stardust. H for home, P for pink.

2. What are three words you love?
I covered some of them in this post, so here are three more: mountains, wolf, slipper.

3. What are three words you hate?
Exegesis, orifice, dribbling. Any long, complicated word used in place of a shorter, simpler word.

4. If you were to create a word, what would it be, and what would it describe?
I’m honestly not sure. They’re so many neat words out there that I have a hard time thinking of something new. My brain’s drawing one huge blank.

5. What are your three favorite punctuation marks?
I’d never thought of this until now! Commas, semicolons, and question marks: , ; ?

6. What are three of your favorite fonts?
I like Coffee Break, Times New Roman, and whatever the heck font they use on the covers of the Artemis Fowl books.

7. Abbie’s question: If you could change the way one word sounded, which would it be and how would it sound?
Again, I’m coming up blank. I did mispronounce a ton of words when I was younger, though: wiolin instead of violin, doity instead of dirty, Herminoin instead of Hermione. I guess I’m all out of alternate sounds.

Okay, I nominate Alyssa, Christina, Joni, Kelsey, Rachana, and Lydia. My question is:
Do you know of a word that looks better than it sounds?

No pressure, but I’d love to see your answers!

  1. OOOH DUDE GOOD QUESTION. <3 I think the word "Calormen" from Narnia looks better than it sounds (at least when I say it?? IDK IS IT "KAL-OR-MEN" OR "KALE-OR-MEN"??) xD "Any long, complicated word used in place of a shorter, simpler word." <<< YUSSSSS. I AM IN SUCH AGREEMENT WITH YOU THO. It just bothers me when (especially writers but people in general) use big words instead of normal ones. it's like, "who are you trying to convince of your intelligence??" #burn XD

THIS IS FABULOUS THANK YOU FOR DOING THE TAG!! <3

    1. I've always pronounced it like "KAL-OR-MEN" but who knows? I think we've already established how good I am with pronunciation. :)
Honestly, I'd rather have people think I'm understandable and concise than especially smart. I think it was Strunk & White who talked about ten-cent words vs. dollar words?
You're welcome. I had so much fun doing it!

  2. Slipper is a pretty great word. I like the ones that sound kind of like their meaning.
I had some funky mispronunciations when I was little, too. I threw an extra syllable in a lot of words: Han-da-burger, Pan-na-cake... Yeah...

    Thanks for the tag! ^^

    1. You're welcome! I thought your post was awesome--canary is such a colorful, pretty word.
Slipper has always sounded so romantic and fairy-tale-y to me. I think it's mostly thanks to Cinderella's glass slipper and the Twelve Dancing Princesses.

  3. GASP I thought I commented on this post but apparently I did not!! I really like Artemis Fowl as well and now I have the mispronunciation "doity" circling round and round my head, so thanks for that :p

    1. Artemis Fowl is the best. :) I had a habit of pronouncing the "ir" sound like "oi" for some reason...and everyone thought it was super funny, which just made me mad. Looking back, it WAS pretty funny.

  4. WOAH I am totally stealing this tag. Just saying. I think that A is a great letter of the alphabet, but I admit to having some love for H myself. :) I think that Times New Roman is good, too, and I also like the Artemis Fowl font because it is lovely. :)

Also, mountains, mountains, mountains. Anyway. STEALING!

    1. Yes! Steal it--I'd love to see your answers.
They're plenty of gorgeous fancy fonts out there, but I type all my drafts in Times New Roman, so it always looks familiar and sort of comforting to me. Kind of weird, but that's why I love it.
