Taking Stock: March 2016

Sorry for the radio silence! School has been pretty crazy lately, but I’m hoping to blog more in April.

Watching: Daredevil season 2. It’s really hard for me to write/talk about my favorite shows without spoiling them, so I’ll just say that season 2 was everything I hoped it would be and more. So, so, SO good. All of the new characters were amazing, and even though the Punisher is my favorite (obviously), Elektra runs a close second.
Stressing: Over homework. Finals are coming up in about four weeks.
Reading: I just finished The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes and Still Alice by Lisa Genova.
Journaling: Pretty sparsely this month. Mostly thanks to lackluster reading, tons of homework, and a massive show hangover (thanks, Daredevil).
Listening: To way too much Taylor Swift. My favorites are “Style”, “Out of the Woods”, and “Welcome to New York”.
Wearing: High heels for the first time in ages and wondering how I ever used to be able to run--much less walk--in them.
Eating: Lamb and Peking duck for Easter.
Also reading: Wolverine: Origin, Batgirl, Vol 1: The Darkest Reflections, Batgirl/Robin: Year One, Blue Beetle, Vol 1, and New Suicide Squad, Vol 1. I need to read more Marvel comics--DC is great, but there’s only so much Batman you can take at one time. Ditto for the Suicide Squad.
Craving: A really, really good YA book (any genre). It’s been a long time since I got the full-five-stars, sobbing-my-eyes-out, why-can’t-I-live-in-this reaction from a book, and I miss it.
Knitting: That scarf. It’s still nowhere near finished, but one day...one day...it will be. :) And yes, I did knit while watching Daredevil, so more than once I had one eye on my stitches and the other on whichever guy was getting beaten to a pulp onscreen. It was amazing.
Thinking: About starting up a blog specifically for reviewing comics and graphic novels. I barely have time to blog here anymore, but we’ll see. Maybe this summer….

  1. I think I've said it, but I'll say it again- how I WISH Netflix would release Daredevil on dvd so I could watch it!
I've been curious about "Still Alice"- how was it?
I would love to read your reviews of graphic novels and comics... ^^

    1. I hope Netflix releases it on dvd, too! It's an awesome show, with lots of twisty moral/ethical questions that make it so rewarding to watch.
I liked Still Alice. Style-wise, it wasn't the best I've ever read, but it works really well on an emotional level--I cried. :)

  2. I think "Welcome to New York" is possibly my favorite song from Taylor Swift's 1989 album. I mean, I love most of the songs on the CD, including all the popular ones--"Blank Space", "Style", etc.--but "Welcome to New York" just has this amazing vibe, so even though I don't want to move to New York I totally love the song. ;)

So. Perhaps you weren't looking for this, but when you said that you're craving a good YA book I couldn't help but try and find a recommendation for you. (And I discovered we weren't friends on Goodreads! So I added you. :) Anyway, I think we generally seem to read different kinds of books, but: If you're in the mood for historical mystery, check out The Caged Graves by Dianne K. Salerni; for a contemporary/slightly paranormal read, The Vanishing Season by Jodi Lynn Anderson is gorgeous; I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak is an amazing book full of large and small acts of kindness that can help restore one's faith in humanity; The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater is a super unique and atmospheric standalone fantasy; and of course Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle quartet is one of my absolute favorite fantasy series of ever with the absolute BEST friendship dynamics. Also, if you want a heartbreaker and you haven't read Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein or The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, then I absolutely read them but brace yourself for the heartache! (Also, they're both set during WWII, just in case you need to prepare yourself for that kind of subject matter.)

Okay, but enough about books. I'll stop now. ;) And good luck preparing for your finals! Your summer break must feel so close and yet so far away, yikes. :)

    1. Thanks for all the recommendations! I'll be looking into all of them, but especially I Am the Messenger. It looks SO cool.
I visited New York when I was around thirteen and have wanted to move there ever since, so of course I adore "Welcome to New York". I remember really, really wanting to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (I'd just read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) and only making it halfway across. Also waking up at night and looking out at the city lights. It was wonderful.
Thanks--I can't WAIT for summer break.

  3. Still Alice made me so SAD. Oh my goodness. I still haven't decided if that's a good thing or not.

The second picture is my favourite <3

    1. I cried. I haven't seen the movie yet and honestly don't know if I want to--the book put me through enough trauma as it is.
It is a really cute picture, isn't it?

  4. Knitting while watching Daredevil is so rad! And major props for you being able to run in heels. That is something I fear I will never accomplish -- I have only one pair of heels, and they sit in my closet collecting dust until I have to pull them out for special occasions, LOL. Also, have you read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline? That's a YA book I had to read for class, but ended up loving it. It's sci-fi/gamer oriented, and so well written! :)

    1. I read the first couple chapter of Ready Player One but then had to return it to the library--I'm hoping to give it another try some day. I used to be able to run in high heels, and it was my proudest accomplishment...until I quit wearing them for a long time and couldn't anymore.
      Thanks for stopping by! :)

  5. Cheering you on for the scarf! :D :D And I saw a Youtube ad for Elektra and man, I am intrigued. I really don't have time to watch another TV show but Daredevil seems REALLY COOL. And OMG PEKING DUCK YOU LUCKY GIRL. Enjoy :D :D

    1. I think Daredevil would be right up your alley! It has some of the best character development of any show I've watched, and Elektra is amazing.

  6. Urghhh I need to watch Daredevil. *flails sadly* I don't have Netflix, or I'd be all over it.

    1. There's definitely a running theme in the comments about how much Netflix NEEDS to release Daredevil on DVD. I think you'd love it--but then again, I'm not all that objective when it comes to my favorite shows. On the bright side, you've read some of the comics and I have yet to get to those.
